Making TechUSB drives

The following steps will allow you to create a TechUSB drive, used for hardware diagnostics on Windows machines.

Procedure

All software images are kept on the Greenville Data server which can be accessed from any UPCC location (via VPN) at \192.168.0.100\data. Specifically, TechUSB images are kept in IMAGES\TechUSB folder.

ImageUSB

We use a program called ImageUSB by PassMark software. This can be downloaded directly from Passmark’s website or it can be found in the GV Data server in Software\Windows - Misc\imageusb.zip.

Flashing the TechUSB image

  1. Plugin the USB drive to be flashed. All content on this drive will be erased so make sure to save any essential data elsewhere before continuing.
    1. Multiple drives can be flashed at the same time. See the “Flash multiple USB drives” section below.
  2. Copy the TechUSB image to your computer. Do not attempt to image the USB over the network.
  3. Copy ImageUSB to your computer and run it as an administrator.
  4. Select the USB drive(s) that you will be imaging.
  5. Make sure “Write image to USB drive” is selected in the “Step 2” section of ImageUSB.
  6. In the “Step 3” section, choose the image you just copied to your computer.
  7. Click Write. You will be prompted for confirmation. Read the prompts and continue.

Note that you may get a “Image Failed” error when complete. This is not accurate most of the time- usually, it completes without error despite this message. You will need to boot to each USB created in order to verify that they are complete.

Flash multiple USB Drives

ImageUSB can flash multiple drives at once, to save time. Just plug in as many USB drives as you can (use a USB hub if necessary) and then launch ImageUSB and select all flash drives applicable. Otherwise, the steps are the same as above.
