Creating Wireless Networks for Cypress Glen Residents

Cypress Glen residents, by default, connect to one of the following networks:

  • Cypress Glen Resident: Smart phones and computers
  • Cypress Glen Resident WiFi: Printers, smart devices, TVs, etc

Upon request, Cypress Glen IT may request that the resident be given their own personal WiFi network. This is usually requested to resolve issues with devices that can't join either of the two default networks, or in situations where devices connect but can't communicate with one another across the networks.

Summary

  1. Check if the resident already has a network. In Settings -> Networks, look for a network with the resident's apartment number. If they don't have a network yet, create one now (see "Create Resident Network")
  2. Check if the resident already has a wireless network. In Settings -> Wireless Networks, look for a wireless network with the resident's apartment number. If they don't have a wireless network yet, create one now (see "Create Resident Wireless Network")
  3. Create and populate an AP Group for the resident.
  4. Wait for provisioning
  5. Confirm that the selected AP is broadcasting the correct networks by going to Devices -> find and click on the AP -> WLANs

Create Resident Network

  1. Go to Settings -> Network. Double check that the resident doesn't already have a network.
  2. Sort the network list by VLAN in descending order (the arrow in the VLAN column header should be pointing down)
  3. Look at the last used VLAN for a resident network, which will be the first resident VLAN in this sort order. You will use that VLAN + 1 for the new resident network.

    1. For example, if the last used resident network had VLAN 3150, then the VLAN that you will use for the new network is 3151.
  4. Create the new network
  5. Name the network using the Cypress Glen Naming Convention
  6. In the VLAN field, enter the VLAN ID identified in step 3
  7. In the Gateway IP/subnet field, enter 10.10.###.1/24, where ### is the last 3 digits of the VLAN. For example, a network with the VLAN 3151 will have a gateway IP/subnet of 10.10.151.1/24.
  8. Click the button next to the Gateway IP/subnet field to update the DHCP range
  9. Save the network

Create Resident Wireless Network

  1. Go to Settings -> Wireless Network. Double check that the resident doesn't already have a network.
  2. Create a new wireless network
  3. Using the Cypress Glen Naming Convention document, name the wireless network with a "human friendly" name
  4. Enter the password, which will be the resident's phone number. These typically are of the form 252-830-####. Only use numbers for the password. For a resident with phone number 252-830-1234, their wireless network password should be 2528301234.
  5. From the dropdown list of networks, choose the network identified in the previous section.

    1. Unfortunately, the networks in this list are in order of date created. If you just created a network, it will be at the bottom of the list. If you are adding a wireless network for a resident that already has their own network, it will be at a seemingly random place in the list.
  6. Create a new AP Group, named according to the Cypress Glen Naming Convention
  7. If this is a newly installed AP, then you will immediately be able to add it to this AP Group on the same interface from which you create the group. Do so now.

    1. Otherwise, save the newly created AP Group as is. Find the "Default AP Group" AP Group and click Edit. Find the AP for this resident in the interface that appears and remove the check mark to remove the AP from the Default AP Group, then save the group. You can now add the AP to the newly created AP Group.
  8. Additionally, add the AP to the "Primary 3 SSIDs" AP group.
  9. Save the wireless network.

Provisioning usually takes 2-5 minutes. To make sure you've made the correct changes, go to the Devices tab and find the AP for this resident. Click on it in the list to open the device details pane. At the bottom, expand the "WLANs" header. You should see 4 networks:

  1. The SSID (wireless network) you just made
  2. The 3 primary SSIDs: Cypress Glen Resident, Guest WiFi, and CG_ADMIN

You will see these listed twice here - once for 5 GHz and once for 2.4 GHz.
