How to refurbish a device

A refurbished device is a device that has been repaired or upgraded to be a better fit for selling. A refurbished device (also known as a refurb) is sold for a minimum of $300+ and should never have more than $100+ put into repairing/upgrading it to make it able to sell.

Windows devices

  1. Refurbing a Windows device is the same regardless of whether it is a tower or a laptop. You first want to do a physical inspection. Are there scratches? Broken or missing pieces? If you believe that the device is physically fit then move onto the next step.
  2. Perform regular diagnostics. Turn the device on and run RAM and drive diagnostics to ensure that everything is working properly. If the drive in the device is an HDD then take a new 240GB SSD from the shop and install it into the device. Load Windows 10 onto and update it to the latest version.
  3. After that make a WO for the device. Label it as a refurb and for any of the required contact information put “NA”. Fill out the device's name and serial number. For the problem description type “This device is a refurb”. Check in the WO and physically label the device with its WO PCID.
  4. Next, set the device up for the remote team. The remote team is going to install basic applications on the device. Once the remote team has finished. Run final diagnostics on the device to make sure everything is good to go. Once everything passes, fill out the pricing for the device.
  5. Once the pricing has been determined and put in the cart be sure to mark all of your actions and mark the device itself as a refurb. Then physically take the device and place it above Alpha station. That is all that needs to be done to a Windows device to make it a refurb. It is now ready to be sold to a cx.

MAC Devices

  1. For macbooks, iMacs, and mac minis. The procedure for refurbs are the same. First, do a physical inspection of the device. Is anything cracked or bent? Are there screws or pieces missing? If everything looks fine, move onto the next step.
  2. Power on the device and run either AST1 or AST2. Once diagnostics finish, see what failed and what passed. If everything passes, move onto the next step. If something fails, research how much it will cost to fix it. Determine with the previous guideline whether or not it is worth it to move forward with the repair. Be sure to speak with your manager before you attempt to purchase a part for the device. (If you are refurbing an Imac and it has a HDD be sure to install a 240GB SSD in it)
  3. After everything has passed diagnostics. Erase the drive and do a fresh install of the latest OS that the device can handle. Once the OS has been reloaded make a WO for the device. Name the WO “refurb” and for any required contract information type “NA”. Fill out the device's name and serial number. For the problem description type “This is a refurb”. Check in the device and physically label the device with its WO PCID.
  4. After the WO has been made, set the device up for remote. The remote team will install basic applications for the device. After they are done fill out the pricing in the cart of the WO. Once that is done physically place the device above the Alpha station and mark the WO that it is a refurb.

IOS Devices

  1. First do a physical inspection of the device. Check for liquid, cracks, missing security screws and if the SIM tray is in. Next turn the device on and run diagnostics to make sure the device is working properly. If the battery fails then speak with your manager about replacing it. If anything else fails then recycle the device.
  2. If everything passes then do an IOS reset on the device. If Find my Device is active then the device can not be sold. If Find My Device is deactivated then proceed with the IOS reset. Once the reset is complete create a WO for the device. Label the name as “Refurb” and for any required contact information type “NA”. Fill out the name and serial number of the device. For the problem description type “This is a refurb”. Check in the device and physically label it with the WO’s PCID. From there fill out the pricing for the device. Then mark it has a refurb and physically place it above Alpha station
