How to use Hirens
Hirens is a bootable HDD diagnostics and stress test for Windows
Use Hirens to:
- Run storage devices tests
- Test for software issues
Currently, Hirens is mainly booted from a CD. There are some USBs that have Hirens installed on it. The CD’s will be labeled “Hirens” and the USB’s will be labeled “Literally Everything”. Hirens will only work with UEFI.
Boot into Hirens
- Shut down the computer
- Insert the CD or USB drive into the device
- Boot into the boot menu of the device
- Select Hirens
Testing Storage device
- On the desktop there is a folder named “Utilities”. Open the folder
- When the window opens there will be several new folders. Open “Hard Disk Tools”.
- On the next window click on the :Diagnostic” folder
- On the next window click “HDTune”
- Now the diagnostic window will be open. At the very top is where you can select which drive you would like to test. Once you have selected the drive you want to test. Click on “Error Scan” and then click “Start”
- The drive will now be tested to see if there are any bad blocks. If all the blocks are green then the device is healthy. If any blocks are red then the drive is failing. The test will take a couple of hours to complete
Test for Software Issues
If you need to test to see if a windows device is having a software issue. You can boot to Hirens and try to recreate the issue. If you are able to recreate the issue then the issue is not software related. If you are not able to recreate the issue then the issue is most likely software related
