How to Enable Device Encryption on Windows Home

Support Article | University PC Care

If you’re using Windows 10 or 11 Home, you won’t have access to full BitLocker encryption — but you may still be able to protect your data using Device Encryption. This built-in security feature helps prevent unauthorized access to your files if your computer is lost or stolen.

Here’s how to check if it’s available and how to enable it.

Check if Device Encryption Is Available

  1. Open the Start Menu and type System Information.
  2. In the System Information window, look for Device Encryption Support near the bottom.
  3. If it says:
    • "Meets prerequisites" → Your device likely supports Device Encryption.
    • "Reasons for failed automatic device encryption" → Your hardware may not support it, or settings may need to be changed (like enabling TPM or Secure Boot in BIOS).

Device Encryption requires:
- TPM 2.0
- UEFI firmware
- Secure Boot
- Modern Standby (on supported devices)

How to Enable Device Encryption

If your device supports it, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings (Start > Settings).
  2. Go to Privacy & Security (or Update & Security in Windows 10).
  3. Select Device Encryption from the sidebar.
  4. Click Turn on.

Windows will begin encrypting your drive in the background. You can continue to use your computer while it completes.

If you don't see a "Device Encryption" option, your device may not support it — or it may be managed by your organization or vendor.

Save Your Recovery Key

When Device Encryption is enabled, Windows automatically generates a recovery key. This key allows you to regain access if you forget your login password or if Windows can’t verify your identity.

Your recovery key may be saved to:

Important: Do not lose your recovery key. Without it, your data could become permanently inaccessible.
