How to Clean Your AirPods

Support Article | University PC Care

Over time, AirPods can accumulate earwax, dust, and grime — especially if they’re used daily. Regular cleaning not only keeps them looking good, but also helps maintain audio quality and hygiene.

This guide will walk you through the safe way to clean AirPods, AirPods Pro, and the charging case without damaging sensitive components.

What You'll Need

Gather a few simple tools before you begin:

  • A soft, dry, lint-free cloth (microfiber is ideal)
  • A cotton swab or dry soft-bristled brush
  • A toothpick or wooden dental pick (optional, for stubborn debris)
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol (for the exterior only — never use on speaker mesh)
  • Dry compressed air (optional — use carefully and sparingly)

Important: Never use water, bleach, or submerge your AirPods or case in any liquid.

How to Clean the AirPods or AirPods Pro

  1. Wipe the exterior
Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe down the AirPods. If needed, dampen the cloth slightly with 70% isopropyl alcohol — but avoid all openings and speaker mesh.

  2. Clean the speaker mesh

    • Use a dry soft-bristled brush to dislodge dust and debris from the speaker openings.
    • Gently remove wax or particles with a toothpick or wooden pick, being careful not to push anything inside.
    • Avoid using anything wet or sharp near the speaker area.
  3. For AirPods Pro (ear tips)

    • Gently remove the silicone tips from the AirPods Pro.
    • Rinse them under warm water only (no soap or chemicals).
    • Dry them completely before reattaching.

How to Clean the Charging Case

  1. Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth. You can lightly dampen the cloth with alcohol if needed.
  2. Clean the interior carefully using a cotton swab or soft brush. Avoid putting anything into the charging ports.
  3. Remove debris from the Lightning port using a dry toothbrush, compressed air, or a non-metallic tool.

Avoid: Using anything metal, inserting liquids into the case, or over-brushing the contact pins.

How Often Should You Clean Them?

  • Weekly if you use your AirPods daily
  • Immediately if you notice muffled sound, charging issues, or see visible dirt buildup
  • Before and after workouts if you're using them for exercise

Need Help or Repairs?

If your AirPods still sound muffled, won’t charge, or have persistent issues after cleaning, they may need a deeper inspection or service.
